Walking Retreats: Small-Group Walking Trips Abroad

A walking retreat is a small-group trip built around relaxed days on foot: easy-paced walks on beautiful footpaths, your bag sent ahead, and a good meal waiting at the end of the day. Our walking retreats follow England’s Cotswold Way through storybook villages, with bookish evenings along the way, and we take care of the hotels, luggage transfers, and every detail.

Why We Walk

Why a walking retreat?

Walking is the best way we know to really see a place. You notice the stone walls, the sheep, and the bakery you would have driven right past. Our team walked the entire Cotswold Way before we planned a single retreat there, and we kept only the best stretches: the views, the villages, and the pubs worth stopping for.
Every walking day is relaxed, your bag goes ahead, and you can always transfer to the next village or skip a day. This is about enjoying the miles, not counting them.

A Day on a Walking Retreat

What a day actually looks like

Every itinerary is different, and everything is optional. Here’s how most walking days go.

Breakfast at the hotel, then a relaxed 4 to 7 mile walk on well-kept footpaths, with your larger bag sent ahead so you only carry a day pack.

Lunch together at a village pub, often with a view across the hills.

Keep walking with one of our hosts for a 10 to 12 mile day, or transfer ahead for an afternoon of bookshops, cafés, and exploring the village.

Dinner at a historic, farm-to-table pub, and several evenings a week, a book club discussion about the books shared before the trip.

Meet Your Hosts

Who you’ll walk with.

Our walking trips are led by Away hosts who know these trails well, and one of them always walks the full day, so whether you go further or stop early, you’re never on your own.

Walking Retreat FAQ

“The attention to detail in The Azores trip planning was impeccable and when hiccups with weather, etc occurred you pivoted with a smile.”
– Gwen R., Azores 2025

A walking retreat is a small-group trip built around relaxed days on foot: easy-paced walks, your bag sent ahead, good food, and plenty of time to explore. Our walking retreats follow England’s Cotswold Way, and Away Retreats handles the hotels, luggage transfers, and every detail.

A deposit reserves your spot (you’ll see the amount on each retreat’s room cards), and the remaining balance is due 120 days before the retreat starts. A payment plan is available on every retreat, as long as everything is paid in full by then. Each retreat page lists its cancellation terms.

Usually 4 to 7 miles on well-kept grass, dirt, and gravel footpaths, at a relaxed pace with plenty of stops. After lunch, you can keep walking with one of our hosts for a 10 to 12 mile day, or transfer ahead to the next village. You can skip any walking day entirely.

Every one of our walking trips includes pre-trip and logistics support, airport transfers, boutique hotels, most meals, luggage transfers on walking days, and the group activities on the itinerary. Each retreat page lists exactly what’s included. Travel insurance is required on every trip, and we include a recommended provider in your confirmation email.

Absolutely. Solo travelers are welcome on every retreat. Each retreat page lists its room options, from private rooms to shared rooms matched with another guest.

Not at all. If you can walk a few miles comfortably, you’ll be fine. Sneakers or trail runners work well on these paths, and you can always transfer ahead, so you never walk farther than you’d like. Everything is optional.
