Reading Retreats: Slow Travel for Book Lovers

A reading retreat is a small-group trip built around books, and a whole lot more: a shared read before you go and book club conversations along the way, plus walks, markets, long meals, and time to explore, with unhurried afternoons to read. Walk England’s Cotswold Way or settle into Morocco’s Ourika Valley, and we take care of the lodging, airport transfers, and every detail.

A Note from Lindsay

Why a reading retreat?

One night in Scotland, we went around the dinner table answering a single question: if you could choose one book that everyone in the world had to read, what would it be? That’s the kind of conversation our Reading Retreats are built around. Samantha and Deb, the co-founders of Book Club Salida, helped create and lead our Reading Retreat in New Mexico, and we’ve been building on it ever since.
When we plan one now, we look for bookshops worth browsing, somewhere beautiful to walk, and long afternoons with nothing on the schedule but your book. You don’t need to be a fast reader, or even finish the book. You just need to love a good story.

A Day on a Reading Retreat

What a day actually looks like

Every itinerary is different, and everything is optional. Here’s how most days on our Reading Retreats go.

Breakfast, then the day’s walk or class. On England’s Cotswold Way that means a relaxed 4 to 7 miles between storybook villages. In Morocco’s Ourika Valley, it’s Pilates, then a morning outing to the Atlas Mountains or the Berber souks.

Lunch together at a village pub or around the table at the retreat. On walking days, you can always take the transfer ahead instead of walking further.

Time to read. Browse the independent bookshops in Bath and Broadway, settle in with books and Moroccan tea, or find a quiet chair by the pool.

Dinner together, and several times during the week, a relaxed book club conversation about the book everyone read before the trip. Join in, or just listen.

Reading Retreat FAQ

“Away Retreats plans and executes wonderful getaways, freeing the participants to be fully immersed in the experience without having to worry about logistics. Beautiful locations, wonderful leaders, and great service.”
– Melanie K., Away Retreats guest

A reading retreat is a small-group trip, built around books and slow travel: a shared book before you go, book club conversations along the way, and real time to read. Away Retreats handles the logistics, from airport transfers to lodging and the group activities.

A deposit reserves your spot (you’ll see the amount on each retreat’s room cards), and the remaining balance is due 120 days before the retreat starts. A payment plan is available on every retreat, as long as everything is paid in full by then. Each retreat page lists its cancellation terms.

You’ll vote on the book from a curated shortlist, and about four months before the retreat, we mail a copy to your door. Most Reading Retreats also include a virtual book club before you travel, then book discussions during the week.

Every Reading Retreat includes pre-trip and logistics support, airport transfers, lodging, most meals, a book mailed to you before the trip, and book club gatherings during the week. Each retreat page lists exactly what’s included. Travel insurance is required on every trip, and we include a recommended provider in your confirmation email.

Absolutely. Solo travelers are welcome on every retreat. Each retreat page lists its room options, from private rooms to shared rooms matched with another guest.

Not at all. Come as you are, whether you read a book a week or haven’t finished one in a while. Book discussions are relaxed, every activity is optional, and there’s no pressure to have read every page.
