Let’s Adventure Together

Inside the Morocco Reading Retreat

For six nights, this Morocco reading retreat brings together three things we love: really good books, really good movement, and the chance to experience a place with genuine curiosity. We’ll pick a book to read together before the trip, then continue the conversation in the Ourika Valley.
Each morning, you can begin with mindfulness, an energetic Pilates class, or both. The week also leaves room for the luxury of uninterrupted reading, whether that means a quiet morning with your book, an afternoon by the pool, or lingering over a conversation about something you’ve just read.
And then there’s Morocco itself. We’ll bake bread the Berber way, sit with a henna artist, hear stories told in the centuries-old hikayat tradition, and spend a morning in the Atlas Mountains, with enough space in the week to slow down and actually take it all in.

Itinerary

The Day-to-Day in the Ourika Valley

Everything is optional on all of our experiences. This is your retreat. You choose what you’d like to do each day.

  • Mornings: a journaling workshop or morning meditation, a movement class, then breakfast.
  • Afternoons: lunch, then free time to read by the pool or book a hammam, massage, pottery class, or a trip to the Agafay Desert or Marrakech.
  • Evenings: group dinner from about 6:30 to 7:30, depending on the day’s activity.

We follow the weather, local rhythms, and opportunities that come up, so activities may move between mornings and afternoons, and we leave room to slow down rather than rush.

Fly into Marrakech (RAK). Private transportation is arranged around arrival times, and the drive is about an hour. If you’re traveling from North America, you’ll need to depart on October 2 to arrive on the 3rd. Settle in, meet the group, and join us for dinner.

  • Morning: our pop-up bookshop, where you choose a book to take home.
  • Afternoon: books and tea, plus a stretch and recover class.

  • Morning: a tour of the Atlas Mountains.
  • Afternoon: book club.

  • Morning & Afternoon: free to read, rest, or explore.
  • Evening: a henna ceremony after dinner.

  • Morning: a visit to the Berber souks.
  • Afternoon: books and tea.
  • Evening: a Moroccan storyteller after dinner.

  • Morning: a traditional Berber bread-making class.
  • Afternoon: our book exchange.

After breakfast, private transportation back to Marrakech (RAK).

What your days actually look like.

Here, days move between energetic Pilates, good books, long Moroccan meals, and traditions shared by the people who keep them alive, with plenty of space left to slow down.

The Place

Cactus garden and a guesthouse at the retreat, with snow-capped Atlas Mountains behind

A Boutique Moroccan Stay

Our home for the week is built in the traditional Moroccan style, with local materials and handcrafted details. It’s comfortable and thoughtfully designed rather than high luxury, with a warm, welcoming atmosphere that feels like home.

Low round tables set for a meal on a terrace, with Berber rugs and floor cushions

Every Meal Included

From breakfast each morning to long lunches and dinners around the table, every meal is included. Everything is freshly prepared and rooted in Moroccan ingredients and traditions, and meant to be enjoyed slowly, together.

Small group walking a dirt trail past terraced green fields in the Atlas Mountains

The Atlas Mountains

Our morning in the Atlas Mountains is not an ordinary stroll. We’ll explore quiet valleys, meet local communities, and learn about the traditions of the Amazigh people who have called this region home for generations.

The Books

Stack of colorful hardcover books with one open on top

Pre-Retreat Book Club

You’ll help choose the book by voting from a curated shortlist, and about four months before the retreat, we’ll mail a copy to your door. Around two months before departure, join our virtual book club discussion if you’d like.

Books & Moroccan Tea

We’ll gather over Moroccan tea, including green tea grown right on the property, to talk about the book we’ve all read. Expect good questions, different perspectives, and plenty of tangents. Just bring your thoughts.

Open-roof riad courtyard with a zellige tile floor, carved wooden doors, and a cushioned daybed in an arched nook

A Pop-Up Bookshop

For a few days, a corner of our Moroccan home becomes a tiny bookshop of our own. Browse from the cushions, swap recommendations, and choose one book to take home. It’s included with your retreat.

The Traditions

Guests gathered around a stone fire pit at dusk, framed by olive trees

Moroccan Storytelling

Hikayat, the Moroccan tradition of storytelling, has passed stories aloud from one generation to the next for centuries, and practicing storytellers are becoming rare. One evening, we’ll hear traditional stories shared in English and Darija.

Henna with a Local Artist

Passed down through generations of Berber women, henna is a symbol of blessing, protection, and celebration. Sit with a local henna artist and watch intricate Berber designs take shape.

Berber Bread Making

We’ll learn to make bread the Berber way, shaping dough by hand and baking it over a traditional fire. It’s a simple, time-honored method that connects us to generations of Moroccan kitchens.

The Slow Moments

Guests stretching on mats under a wooden pergola on the rooftop, with trees and mountains beyond

Morning Pilates

Each morning, choose a mindfulness session, a Pilates class, or both. Classes are energetic and thoughtfully programmed, with excellent instruction and attention to form, in two indoor practice spaces and outside when the weather allows.

Room to Recharge

Away from the constant buzz of everyday life, there’s space to reconnect with yourself, with others, and with the place around you. There’s no right way to unplug, so choose what feels supportive.

Book a massage during your free time. Just ask and we’ll set it up.

Spend some of your free time exploring the Agafay Desert. We’re happy to help you arrange it.

Head into Marrakech during your free time. We’re happy to help you plan it.

Plan to fly in and out of Marrakech (RAK), arriving on October 3 and departing on October 9, 2027. If you’re traveling from North America, you’ll need to depart on October 2 to arrive on the 3rd. Private transportation is arranged around arrival times, and the drive from the airport is about an hour. Most flights are non-refundable, so plan ahead if you book early.

Check the current CDC recommendations for travel to Morocco before you go.

Yes. While it’s nice to unplug, many of us have lives at home that need some communication. There’s WiFi in the welcome area and lobby, so you can check in when you need to.

As experienced travelers who’ve learned to expect the unexpected, we require travel insurance. It helps protect your investment and covers things like illness, injury, family emergencies, travel delays, lost luggage, or trip interruptions. Since retreat payments follow our cancellation policy, it’s best to buy a policy shortly after booking. We include a recommended provider in your confirmation email.

Early October in Morocco is typically warm and comfortable, a wonderful time for exploring and being outdoors. Expect warm days, with cooler mornings and evenings offering a welcome break from the afternoon sun.

You’ll receive a full packing list before you go. It includes things like thin cotton and lightweight wool shirts, a lightweight fleece, a sun hat, and closed-toed shoes, and not much else!

Everything is optional, and classes work for all levels. Pilates classes are energetic and thoughtfully programmed, with attention to form, and there are two gentler stretch and recovery classes during the week. Our morning in the Atlas Mountains means walking through quiet valleys, so bring closed-toed shoes. The rest of the pace is yours, with plenty of time left open for reading and rest.
