Culinary Retreats: Food-First Small-Group Travel

A culinary retreat is a small-group trip for getting to know a place through its food: market tours, cooking with local families, farm-to-table meals, and long dinners together. Eat your way through Oaxaca or Costa Rica’s rainforest, and we take care of the lodging, airport transfers, and every detail.

A Note from Lindsay

Why a culinary retreat?

Meals are part of the experience on every Away retreat. At least one or two are shared feasts, with plate after plate passed around the table, so you taste far more of the cuisine than you’d ever order on your own.
That’s what we look for when we plan a culinary retreat: markets, local cooks, and family kitchens, like the market stall in Oaxaca where someone presses memelas on a hot comal, or the farm kitchen in Costa Rica cooking over a wood fire. And whatever you eat, or don’t, we’ll make sure there’s a seat at the table for you.

A Day on a Culinary Retreat

What a day actually looks like

Every itinerary is different, and everything is optional. Here’s how most days on our culinary retreats go.

Breakfast together, then the morning’s outing: a walking food and market tour in Oaxaca, cooking with a Zapotec family in Teotitlán del Valle, or a farm tour at our rainforest lodge in Costa Rica.

Lunch together, and often the main event. Think smoky market food halls, home kitchens, or farm-to-table plates made with vegetables from the garden.

Free time to wander Oaxaca’s historic center, swim in the rainforest swimming hole, or join an optional mezcal tasting at a family-run agave farm.

Group dinner, family-style and unhurried. Some nights add Oaxaca’s night markets, or a candlelit table with the rainforest all around.

A few common questions

Culinary Retreat FAQ

“Every detail was thoughtful and well planned from activities to meals.”
– Anna H., Away Retreats guest

A culinary retreat is a small-group trip, built around food: market tours, cooking with local families, farm-to-table meals, and long dinners together. Away Retreats handles the logistics, from airport transfers to lodging and the group activities.

A deposit reserves your spot (you’ll see the amount on each retreat’s room cards), and the remaining balance is due 120 days before the retreat starts. A payment plan is available on every retreat, as long as everything is paid in full by then. Each retreat page lists its cancellation terms.

Not at all. A culinary retreat is about tasting, learning, and sharing a table, not proving anything in the kitchen. Hands-on experiences, like cooking with a Zapotec family, are relaxed and welcoming, and every activity is optional.

Every culinary retreat includes pre-trip and logistics support, airport transfers, lodging, most meals, and the market tours, food experiences, and group activities on the itinerary. Each retreat page lists exactly what’s included. Travel insurance is required on every trip, and we include a recommended provider in your confirmation email.

Absolutely. Solo travelers are welcome on every retreat. Each retreat page lists its room options, from private rooms to shared rooms matched with another guest.

Yes! There are options for vegetarians, pescatarians, omnivores, and carnivores alike, and gluten-free diets can be accommodated too. Let us know when you book, and we’ll make sure every meal works for you.
